        Ability to motivate
        November 21, 2019

        Emotional intelligence

There are five components of EI model:

        – Self-Awareness or ability to recognize and understand your own emotions
        – Self-Regulation or ability to control and manage your own emotions
        – Self-motivation
        – Empathy or ability to understand the emotions of other people
        – Social Skills or ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships with other people.

It is very important for you as a skipper to control your own emotions but also to identify the emotions of your guests on board. In a small and limited space such as a sailing boat, with unfamiliar passengers on board, it is very important to create a positive atmosphere and to establish a good, adequate and trustful relationship with your passengers. EI will help you to control your emotions, listen, properly understand and properly respond to your passengers’ emotions and reactions.

The four dimensions of a hierarchical model of EI are:

        1. Perceiving emotion
        2. Using emotions to facilitate thought
        3. Understanding emotions
        4. Managing emotions.
